This branch of UNEP is a primary driving force in the UN system for international activities related to the sound management of chemicals. Their aim is to promote chemical safety and provide countries with access to information on toxic chemicals.
Since 1972, UNEP promotes chemical safety by providing policy advice as well as technical guidance. The organization developed the report “Mercury: A Time to Act” which highlights the impact of mercury on human health and ecosystems. UNEP also initiated the Minamata Convention on Mercury which produced a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury.
